Original notes
Buchloe’s relationship to BMW is easy to flatten into “tuner.” That flattening is how ordinary E31s sneak into rare-car conversations. The B12 5.0 coupe refuses the flatten: it is an Alpina product on the 8 Series architecture, built in a short run from mid-1990 to mid-1994, and counted at 97 cars before the hotter B12 5.7 (57 units) took the flag. Hemmings’ model feature puts the point bluntly — not one was earmarked for the U.S. market when new. Scarcity here is not a rare paint code on a volume coupe. It is the entire catalog.
What Alpina changed matters because it is mechanical, not merchandising. Period and reference coverage describe an M70 5.0 V12 with higher-compression Mahle pistons, larger intake valves, revised heads and management, a unique exhaust path, and a raised redline — factory claims around 350 hp and 470 N·m, with a ZF four-speed automatic recalibrated to use the higher engine speed. Chassis work (springs, Bilstein damping, Alpina wheels/valance language) and the blue-dial instruments complete the product identity. There was no manual B12 5.0 coupe; the auto is not a compromise anecdote, it is the series.
This example is publicly identified as #54 of 97, VIN WAPBC50C02D110054 — the WAP manufacturer code is the quickest way a buyer separates Alpina truth from a dressed 850i. The ownership romance is thinner than the Lazzarino or a works race bike: German delivery, later U.S. importation (2025 in venue materials), roughly 88,000 km showing. That is fine. Rare Machines scores production and documentation hard on this one; provenance gets an honest mid-single-digit because the chassis does not yet carry a public competition or museum novel. The bar still clears.
California buyers should treat emissions and title path as diligence, not as rarity theater: venue materials note the car has not been CARB-inspected. That is a registration problem for some zip codes, not a Hard Gate.

Provenance
What we would need to know
Model production documented at 97 coupés (e31.net; Alpina-Archive; Hemmings), auto-only package, not a U.S.-market factory allocation when new. This example publicly identified as #54 of 97, VIN WAPBC50C02D110054, German delivery then 2025 US import in venue materials. Seller-stated items to verify include ~88k km, recent service, Montana title in seller LLC name, odometer Exempt notation, and not CARB-inspected status.
Price context
How to read the number
Public sold results for B12 5.0 coupés are sparse enough that each sale teaches more than a guide average. Do not price this against garden 850i/850Ci outcomes — those fail G2/G3. Compare only confirmed WAP-identity B12 5.0 (and carefully, 5.7) results, adjusting for miles, docs, and U.S. compliance friction. Rare Machines is not appraising this car.
