History

Original notes

Auction lanes are thick with late Desmosedici replicas and tidy Monsters. A factory 750SS is a different object. Bonhams’ Autumn Stafford sale lists this 1976 Ducati 750SS — square-case bevel-drive desmo café hardware from the short specialist run that kept a 750 sporting twin alive after the round-case 401-unit 1974 burst. Catalog language and marque consensus put later square-case 750SS production around 250–300 examples. That clears Path A without special pleading.

Public lot identity includes frame DM750SS076027 and engine 075881 DM750.1. The machine is offered from a Swiss collection after a reported concours restoration in the workshop of Dominik Ellenrieder, acquired in finished form by the current vendor. A German Fahrzeugbrief photocopy summarizes a 1977 first registration and 1987 German re-registration noting period racing-style equipment (fairing, Tomaselli bars, rear-sets, drilled discs). Odometer displays 1.5 km since restore — useful diligence language, not a Rare Machines certification of total distance from new. We do not invent Isle of Man or Imola starts for this frame; the Imola story belongs to the model lineage (Paul Smart, 1972), not to a forged provenance sticker on this motorcycle.

Significance is industrial and cultural: the 750SS translated the Imola racer’s tank/seat/half-fairing brief into a road-legal factory café that Cycle magazine and period press treated as the outer edge of sporting production. Clip-ons, rear-sets, twin front discs, Conti-style megaphones, green frame against silver bodywork — the silhouette collectors mean when they say 750SS. Diligence still asks whether major cases and numbers match the Fahrzeugbrief and whether the restore preserved or replaced cycle parts.

Score 78 — Rare-enough, not Ultra. Production clears Path A with room under the Ultra ceiling; specification is correct SS café package; provenance is collection/restore rather than works championship; documentation is lot identity plus registration photocopy with a haircut for missing restore invoices; market scarcity is real but not once-a-decade; condition points credit concours presentation with honesty about recommissioning after inactivity.

Watcher’s checklist

  1. Confirm frame DM750SS076027 / engine 075881 DM750.1 against the Fahrzeugbrief copy.
  2. Separate 1974 round-case (401) from this 1976 square-case specialist run (~250–300).
  3. Do not invent race history for this frame — Imola is model lore, not this motorcycle’s CV.
  4. Budget recommissioning after concours storage before any road plan.
  5. Temporary Admission / NOVA notes apply per Bonhams lot symbols — read the sale notices.
  6. Re-check Stafford Lot 232 status before you act.
